1. What is the name of your business and can you tell us a little bit more about it?
My business is Fresh Chef Detroit. I am a personal and private chef throughout Metro Detroit. The bulk of my business is providing weekly in-home chef services for my clients, including shopping, cooking, etc. I also serve as a private chef for certain clients, handling their weekly shopping and cooking and serving them dinner. I also do dinner parties, showers, cooking classes and other small events.
2. What has been your biggest win as an entrepreneur thus far?
For most of my cheffing career I have had a waiting list of people hoping to hire me -- even when I was on medical leave for 18 months. To me, that validated the connections I have made with clients and them referring other people to me.
3. Where do you find daily motivation and inspiration?
To be honest, my clients. I have had a bit of a lull in business in the last couple of months, and I think of the clients who have literally cried when I said I could handle their extensive allergies or a tired new mom who collapsed into my arms after eating a spoonful of soup (I realize hormones were at work here!). For some people, it's just food, but I think I'm providing more than that to my clients.
4. What is the best piece of advice you have received and who was it from?
"Just be you," from my best friend. I like to think I would do that anyway, but I never try to be anything I'm not, or pretend I know how to cook anything I have no experience with. And I'm willing to take a stab at anything.
5. What is your morning routine?
It depends on whether or not I have my daughter that day (James, 5), but other than trying to herd her and get her out the door, my ideal morning would involve a few minutes to gather my thoughts and write in my Empowered Life Planner, working out (a new activity for me this year), and a quick smoothie to take on the road when I head to the store for my clients.
6. What is your favorite podcast?
There are so many! I don't have time for them all. Among my faves: Armchair Expert, Reply All, Terrible Thanks for Asking, Criminal and all the true crime podcasts.
7. Something that most people wouldn’t know about you:
In another lifetime, I once danced in the half-time show of the Cotton Bowl.
8. If you could go back to when you started your company what would you say to yourself?
You can do this. Do your homework and get more sleep!
