1. What is the name of your business and can you tell us a little bit more about it?
I am the owner of Kelly Marshall Fine Art and Color, Construct, Create Studios. Just like the name states, I am an abstract painter and children's art studio owner. I have been running Color, Construct, Create Studios with my dear friend for just under 10 years and in the past 2 years, I started producing my own fine art with the intent of finally pursuing my career as a professional artist. Teaching is my social practice and informs my visual language.
2. What has been your biggest win as an entrepreneur thus far?
After a year of constant self-doubt, I finally had what feels like a huge break and got accepted into a group exhibition with The Jen Tough Gallery and have 2 pieces of art going to Art Santa Fe in July. It has given me the confidence to keep going and the motivation to continue my pursuits.
3. Where do you find daily motivation and inspiration?
My life... I have a truly amazing life surrounded by people who support me, my two sweet boys, and my children's art school. I had a very modest upbringing and when I wake up in my beautiful home every morning, I feel grateful for getting to live the life I imagined.
4. What is the best piece of advice you have received and who was it from?
A couple of years ago, a good friend turned 40. I asked her the total cliche' question of how she felt and her response was awesome. She said, "You know, Kel, the best part about this phase of life is just not giving a F***!!! I know who I am and I don't give any weight to what other people think about me unless they are people who I love and respect." Now that I am 40, I agree! Letting go of the power I used to give to the thoughts and judgments of others has allowed me the freedom to pursue my lifelong dream of being an artist.
5. What is your morning routine?
3 mornings a week, I drag my butt out of bed at the ungodly hour of 5 am to exercise. While getting out the door is often painful, coming back home full of endorphins at 6:30 to a quiet house is lovely. I have a cup of coffee and either sit with my 12-year-old or sit outside in the backyard with our puppy. That half hour between 6:30-7:00 is so peaceful and the perfect way to start the day with a clear head.
6. What is your favorite podcast?
The Creative Introvert!! SOOOO Good! All the tips a creative girl needs while also reinforcing that it's ok to need some alone time!
7. Something that most people wouldn’t know about you:
I hate yoga!!! I want to love it, I do yoga, but I just don't care for it. No matter how many times a week I go and how great I feel afterward, I just cannot enjoy it while I'm there. I'm not "bendy"!!! It could have something to do with my tight runner hamstrings...
8. If you could go back to when you started your company what would you say to yourself?
Why'd you wait so long to do this?!
